  • The Role Of Inflammation In The Body

The Role Of Inflammation In The Body

    Inflammation In The Aging Process

The Role Of Inflammation In The Body

What is inflammation in the body and the aging process?  Inflammation is a biological process that has received quite a bit of press in recent years and has been the subject of numerous different health trends, most popularly in the fields of diet and weight loss.

The National Institute of Health defines Inflammation as:

โ€œa very complex response to an injury, infection, or other stimulus, in which many different cells types and secreted factors orchestrate protective immunity, tissue repair, and resolution of tissue damage.โ€

There is also a new trend of research and information that inflammation may have a key role in the aging process, with some thought-leaders surmising that inflammation is the primary cause of aging in human beings. That may or may not be true, but we can certainly review the current information available to figure out if inflammation is something we should be aware of to help us age gracefully.

The role of inflammation in the elderly:

Most research has been done to understand the role of inflammation in the elderly, especially concerning degenerative diseases. While we are still working to understand the overall role of inflammation in the lifespan of the aging process from youth onwards, there seems to be a fair amount of consensus that it plays a primary role in the accelerated aging process seen in the elderly.

A recent panel organized by National Institute of Health and National Geroscience Interest Group on aging stated that

โ€œIt is now recognized that a mild pro-inflammatory state is correlated with the major degenerative diseases of the elderly.โ€

This begs the question of how does inflammation start or how does it originate?

The Role Of Inflammation In The Body

It is a hard question to answer and might requires a great deal of medical and scientific mumbo jumbo to property explain. A summary from a recent study in  Recent Patents on Inflammation & Allergy Drug Discovery expresses a good general outline, โ€œInflammatory process induces oxidative stress and reduces cellular antioxidant capacity. Overproduced free radicals react with cell membrane fatty acids and proteins impairing their function permanently.โ€

So what exactly does that mean? Simply put, Inflammation  is the bodyโ€™s response to an abnormal event inside the body that your body is working to repair. For example, a common example might be a stubbed toe that swells, turns black or blue and eventually returns to normal over time as healing occurs. That process simply explains how the body is inflaming the injured area to protect it and/or heal it.

    What is Chronic Inflammation?

Chronic inflammation is internal inflammation that occurs over time that can lead to advanced aging processes. As the research study stated, inflammation in the body induces stress and limits other capacities in the body, many of which are key to the aging process, so that the body  can better deal with what’s causing the inflamed area.

Having a basic idea of the aging process and inflammations role in aging, how do prevent inflammation from occurring? Well, the jury is still officially out on this, although two different recent studies examined the role of caloric-restriction on the inflammation process.

Both studies, from the Ageing Research Reviews and Antioxidants and Redux Signaling respectively, examined the anti-inflammatory actions of aging through caloric restriction and exercise. Better known as diet and exercise.  This should not  come as a complete surprise,  that a poor diet, and sedentary lifestyle would increase inflammation and therefore the aging process.

In fact, the study from Antioxidants and Redux signaling found that

โ€œmajor chronic aging-related diseases such as atherosclerosis, arthritis, dementia, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases, are inflammation-related.โ€

It is certainly not a coincidence that most of these conditions are also symptoms of a sedentary lifestyle and poor diet choices.

    SUMMARY:

It is fair to conclude that inflammation has a high correlation and may be a direct cause of many aging and degenerative conditions we face later on in life.

We can also assume that inflammation is a reactive process of our body to attempt to heal events that are not ideal for homeostasis, or events that place stress on the body.

In the case of inflammation, these events are molecular and result from the bad kind of stress, that stress that comes from poor diet choices and lack of exercise, which leads to inflamed cellular responses.

The Role Of Inflammation In The Body

To put it simplky, inflammation increases the process of aging, and poor diet and lack of exercise increases inflammation; therefore, eat a healthy diet and exercise to help inhibit the aging process!

I’d also like to say from personal experience, sometimes the inflammation in the body is just the bodies way of getting our attention.  You then get to choose how you are going to handle the crisis and either listen to your body and make some changes, or ignore and mask the symptoms with medications and carry on.

I have been following a Gluten Free Vegan diet for quite some time and recently enjoy this AIP apple banana recipe. I do eat meat, but I don’t eat eggs, milk, and now grains, legumes, and nuts.

AIP stands for Autoimmune Protocol.  After adjusting my diet to alleviate systemic inflammation, I decided to follow the AIP diet.  One of the biggest challenges for me is what to eat for breakfast.  I am one of those people that MUST eat breakfast in order to have energy needed to function.

Prior to starting this AIP diet, I have been enjoying morning smoothies with pea protein, coconut milk, fresh ginger, frozen apple bananas, berries, chia seed, and even some spinach.  I really enjoyed this morning routine and tasty breakfast.

During this AIP diet for the next few months (16 weeks), I will not be enjoy pea protein.  I will replace it with some Vital Proteins Collagen, but in the meantime, I found something else I like very much

This recipe was shared with me but I modified it to fit my likes.

The ORIGINAL recipe that was shared with me:

1/2 mashed banana, 1/4 tsp salt, & add 1/4 cup hot water, put aside (to soften banana)Another bowl mix 1/3 cup cassava, 1/4 cup finely shredded coconutMix dry & wet after 5 min & add 1/2 cup water. You can add coconut sugar but I leave that out. I cook on griddle w/ avocado oilOnce cooked I put coconut oil & fruit on top. No maple syrup for me but can be used in moderation. They don’t taste like the pancakes we are used to but they taste really good!

    Here’s what I did:
    2 small apple bananas mashed
I did not use 1/4 cup hot water – they were soft enough

I mixed 1/3 cup cassava flour, a little bit of shredded coconut and 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk

I did NOT use any extra sugar because apple bananas are pretty sweet.  I cooked them in coconut oil.  Once cooked, I topped with
Homemade apple sauce (Organic Gala Apples with fresh squeezed lime juice (it’s all I had).  I did put a tablespoon of organic maple syrup on 2nd pancake.

Yield was 2 pancakes and they were Yummy

    What is AIP (Autoimmune Protocol)

The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is a diet that aims to reduce inflammation, pain, and other symptoms caused by autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis (1Trusted Source).

Many people who have followed the AIP diet report improvements in the way they feel, as well as reductions in common symptoms of autoimmune disorders, such as fatigue and gut or joint pain. Yet, while research on this diet is promising, itโ€™s also limited.

This article offers a comprehensive overview of the AIP diet, including the science behind it, as well as what is currently known about its ability to reduce symptoms of autoimmune disorders.  Read more here>

No matter what diet you may be following, I hope you enjoy this recipe if you try it.  The cassava flour is gluten free/wheat free and the rest of the ingredients are vegan if that is important to you.

Leave me a comment below if you decide to make these pancakes.

    To Your Good Health,

After dealing with several food sensitivities, I ended up starting the Autoimmune Protocol Diet. I decided I’d share the experience as I go through the next four months. I’ve already been eliminating so much from diet, I am hoping that giving up the few things I do still eat won’t be a big deal.

    ~ Coffee
    ~ Nuts
    ~ plant butter
~ and the occasional sweet like jelly beans

I already drink a lot of water, but am “kick it up a notch” by getting in 80oz of water a day (YIKES) but I found an easy way to make sure I get the right amount daily. (see image below)

I recycle 20oz water bottles and refill them daily with filtered alkaline water I have in the fridge.

    auto immune protocol diet

The day started with supplements which actually ended up being less than what I was taking prior, lots of water, and eating plenty of organic vegetables and grass fed protein. I’ve already been gluten free (no grains at all really) and dairy free, egg free, so now to tighten things up.

    What is the autoimmune protocol?

The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is a diet that aims to reduce inflammation, pain, and other symptoms caused by autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis

Many people who have followed the AIP diet report improvements in the way they feel, as well as reductions in common symptoms of autoimmune disorders, such as fatigue and gut or joint pain. (source)

The Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP) is just a part of what I’m doing to improve my health. I’m actually doing a cellular detox after doing a Meta-Oxy Test. I’ve been experiencing serious inflammation in my body, with arthritic joints and more and nothing seems to be improving.

The Meta-Oxy Test measures malondialdehyde in the urine, which is a marker for oxidative stress and cell membrane damage due to free radicals. The substance in the test vial reacts with the toxic aldehydes in the urine, specifically the malondialdehyde released when fats are metabolized.

The Hard Part: What I can’t eat

This list gives you an idea of what I’ll be eliminating from my diet. It’s going to take commitment, focus, and some planning. Fortunately, I don’t eat out too much so that won’t be a problem. I also don’t drink so that will be easy.

    Foods to avoid

The AIP diet has strict recommendations regarding which foods to eat or avoid during its elimination phase

    • Grains: rice, wheat, oats, barley, rye, etc., as well as foods derived from them, such as pasta, bread, and breakfast cereals
    • Legumes: lentils, beans, peas, peanuts, etc., as well as foods derived from them, such as tofu, tempeh, mock meats, or peanut butter
    • Nightshade vegetables: eggplants, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, tomatillos, etc., as well as spices derived from nightshade vegetables, such as paprika
    • Eggs: whole eggs, egg whites, or foods containing these ingredients
    • Dairy: cowโ€™s, goatโ€™s, or sheepโ€™s milk, as well as foods derived from these milks, such as cream, cheese, butter, or ghee; dairy-based protein powders or other supplements should also be avoided
    • Nuts and seeds: all nuts and seeds and foods derived from them, such as flours, butter, or oils; also includes cocoa and seed-based spices, such as coriander, cumin, anise, fennel, fenugreek, mustard, and nutmeg
    • Certain beverages: alcohol and coffee
    • Processed vegetable oils: canola, rapeseed, corn, cottonseed, palm kernel, safflower, soybean, or sunflower oils
    • Refined or processed sugars: cane or beet sugar, corn syrup, brown rice syrup, and barley malt syrup; also includes sweets, soda, candy, frozen desserts, and chocolate, which may contain these ingredients
    • Food additives and artificial sweeteners: trans fats, food colorings, emulsifiers, and thickeners, as well as artificial sweeteners, such as stevia, mannitol, and xylitol (SOURCE)

My main reason for taking this on isn’t just about weight loss, but I believe that will be a bonus at the end of this.

I hope to share the positives: more energy, weight loss, maybe better skin, and even share the challenges. Fortunately, there is a lot of support on how to get around the cravings. I’m already set up with a coffee replacement: GASP

Have you had any experience with the Autoimmune Protocol Diet? I’d love to hear your experience so please share in the comments blow.

    Blessings,

The Ultimate Guide to The Benefits of Atkins Bars

ย  This post may be sponsored or contain affiliate links, which means we may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link.

Are you a fan of the Atkins Diet?  At one point in my life, I was.

Most people on the Atkins eating plan are hoping to find ways to stick to the diet by finding easier ways to eat.  They might be thinking about trying the Atkins bars. Although snack bard have their place in the diet, they should be used with caution.

In case you didn’t know, the Atkins company is no longer run by Dr. Atkins, as he has passed on, and some changes made to the company do not necessarily reflect his idea of what this eating plan is all about. Following the Atkins Diet  is a personal decision of course, but for those with questions, you may want to hold off.

    Atkins Bars

    The Various Phases:

During the introduction period of this diet, and through just all other phases as well, the Atkins Bars are not going to help much. They have too many ingredients that are not recommended in the beginning phase of this eating plan yet.

For those who choose to eat the Atkins bars too early,  they may notice they have stalled or plateaued and are not losing weight. Many may not realize the bar has anything to do with the stalled weight loss  because it has the Atkins name on it, but this has been a problem for many.   Once they stopped eating the bars, they started dropping weight again.

Once a dieter has gone through the various phases of the diet and is eating a higher number of more diverse carbohydrates, they may find they can once again incorporate the Atkins bars and still lose weight.

One great feature of The Atkins Diet is that most people on the plan will lose most of their appetite, and that may be one reason why it works for so many. The Atkins bar might be something that would make a great breakfast or even lunch for those who simply don’t feel like eating, but know they should be eating something. They should only do so once they have been on the plan for a while though, and they should watch how they feel after eating one.

So in concluding, the Atkins bars are not a no-no, and they certainly have a place in this eating plan, but a person should use caution. Try them one or two days for one week to be sure they agree with your body and then add more depending on where you are in the plan, and what results you are seeing at each stage.

It might be tempting to try them early on in hopes of making things easier, but anyone hoping to succeed should give it a few months before they try them to be sure their system is ready to handle them without adverse effects. When it comes to finding something simple and easy, the Atkins bars are great when appropriate.

Are you a pregnant women?ย  Women who supplement their diet with a small amount of vitamin C during the second half of pregnancy reduce their risk of one contributor to premature birth, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.ย  The following gives you a basic idea of why vitamin C is important during pregnancy.

The last months of pregnancy and the beginning of the birth process is marked by rupture of the walls (membranes) of the amniotic sac that holds the growing fetus and contains the amniotic fluid.

A healthy pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks and a “Premature birth” occurs when the membranes rupture and birth begins before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Smoking, vaginal infection, and poor maternal nutrition can all increase the risk of premature rupture of the membranes (PROM).

PROM occurs in 10 to 20% of pregnancies worldwide and is the most common cause of premature births. Babies born prematurely face many health risks: their underdeveloped lungs do not function properly, they are highly susceptible to infections, and they have difficulty nursing.

You can understand why is it vitally important do all you can to enhance the health of mom and baby in 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.

    Vitamin C in Pregnancy

    The Role of Vitamin C:

Studies have suggested that inadequate levels of vitamin C in the cells of pregnant women might be linked to increased PROM risk. Vitamin C, an antioxidant nutrient found in fruits and vegetables, plays an important role in the production and repair of connective tissues throughout the body and is believed to be critical to the maintenance of the fetal amniotic sac membranes.

In one study, women with high dietary intake of vitamin C were less likely to experience PROM than women with low intake. The effect of vitamin C supplementation on the risk of PROM has not been previously studied.

    Vitamin C in Pregnancy

In the current study, 120 healthy women who were less than 20 weeks pregnant were randomly assigned to receive either 100 mg of vitamin C per day or placebo. Each woman was evaluated upon entry to the study and every four weeks from week 20 of their pregnancy until delivery.

During this study, PROM incidence was 74% lower in the women taking vitamin C than in the women receiving placebo (7.69% versus 24.5%). The incidence of premature births was also lower in the vitamin C group than in the placebo group (13.4% versus 24%); however, this 44% reduction in risk was not statistically significant because of the small number of people studied.

The results of this study suggest that supplementing with vitamin C can reduce the risk of PROM. Since PROM is involved in more than 40% of all premature births, it is possible that small amounts of supplemental vitamin C might help prevent premature births. A larger study is needed to determine this more definitively.

That being said, ALWAYS consult your physician before taking any kind of supplements and over the counter type medications, etc.ย

There are natural ways to enhance vitamin C through dietย but always consult with your doctor first as your situation is unique to you.ย

What ways are you increasing Vitamin C in your diet (pregnant or not)? For example, I can’t do the sugar in most juices so I supplement, or I eat the occasional tangerine, etc.

Are you storing your vitamins properly?  The following is how to store vitamins properly.  There are two main types of vitamins, water-soluble vitamins, and fat-soluble vitamins, and the way that the body does or does not store vitamin content taken from food depends on which type it is.

The body cannot store water-soluble vitamins and this means that a person needs to replenish their water-soluble vitamin intake on a daily basis. The eight B vitamins and vitamin C are water-soluble vitamins and the body cannot store vitamin content that is either of these.

It is not simply that the body cannot store vitamins that are water-soluble but also the water-soluble vitamins are easily destroyed by improper storage, handling, or cooking of foods that contain these vitamins.

One example of destroying by cooking is the overcooking of vegetbales we eat. It is important not to overcook vegetables by boiling as the water-soluble vitamins are in effect washed out of them but this lack of being able to store vitamins that are water-soluble can be overcome by light cooking or steaming and by using the water that vegetable has been cooked in the form sauces and gravies.

Since the body cannot store vitamin C or the other water-soluble vitamins it is essential to eat a balanced diet with at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables to ensure that enough vitamins are available for the body to use when necessary and a person does not suffer from a vitamin deficiency due to the body’s inability to store vitamin content.

On the other hand, the body can store vitamin content that is fat-soluble. The body will store vitamin content in the fat cells so that it can be used when required and a person does not need to consume as many of these fat-soluble vitamins on as frequent a basis as they do with water-soluble vitamins. The fat cells store vitamin A, D, E, and K as these are all fat-soluble vitamins.

It is also important to store vitamin supplements correctly to ensure that the beneficial qualities of these are not diminished.

So what’s the best way to store?  The best way to store vitamin supplements is in a container with a screw-top lid and to keep the container in a dry place. When storing vitamin supplements for any length of time, it is also essential to check that they have not been kept longer than the expiration date. The vitamin content of supplements cannot be guaranteed if you store vitamin tablets past their use-by date.

Journal keeping is basically without rules and it is an uncensored invitation to cut & paste sketch & chart, and to visualize and unravel every great and small thought you might have. Even being so basic, keeping a journal is a decision that may have value in your life.

Just listing your daily thoughts and experiences can reveal incredible things about your life and may be of value later when you look back at what you wrote.   If you journal daily, you discover a safe place to share your thoughts and you may learn something about yourself. As Henry Miller states, “Writing, like life itself, is a voyage of discovery.”

    keep a journal

You may soon discover that a journal is a great way to zero in on things going on in your life that worry you, excite you, etc.  For instance, if you were preparing to run a marathon and wanted to improve your performance as a runner. You might put together a journal with notes that included:

    Your Diet & nutrition

    Your Speed & strength

    Warm-up & cool down routine

Visualization & meditation to get stronger

    Cross-training strategies that work

Profiles of great athletes you admire

And perhaps a section reserved for ideas and challenges yet to come.

Did you know, elite athletes keep meticulous journals on their training and competition, not only to advance and validate their hard work and progress but to mentally prepare them for athletic mastery.

Journals are great for tracking and brainstorming projects and developing themes such as business creativity or spiritual practice. Your journal can be used as a restorative place to go as you create a playground of sorts for your personal thoughts, professional goals, or a keepsake for travel, weddings, and birthdays or just life in general.

Try personalizing your own journal by creating a system that is both practical and natural for you. For example, I really like to journal using blue gel pen. I actually enjoy writing with it so it encourages me to write more.

As you journal, consider asking questions and dialogue you might have with the world.

Journal with any regularity and see if this kindles some sort of journey in your life.

WRITE UPSIDE DOWN, USE DIFFERENT COLORS OF PENS, collect conversations, favorite song lyrics & meaningful quotes –or start on the last page and see where it takes you!

    keep a journal

Consider your choice of what you journal in. For example, I enjoy hard cover notebooks with lined pages that happen to have Bible Quotes at the bottom.  I enjoy the quote, I write on the lines, and I put down thoughts and worries I have for the day.

What ever you do,  enjoy the adventure!

The basic fundamentals for a journal differs and just depend on you. The more you are willing to just do it, the more confident and the more comfortable you become with the process.

Maidenhair tree seed, also known as Ginkgo.

The ancient maidenhair tree seed was tagged by Darwin as a fossil fuel and the name serves it right. This tree has existed for more than 250 million years, this means that the dinosaurs’ era was full of these species of trees.

One of the most important characteristics of the Maidenhair tree seed is that it is able to withstand almost any climate condition and it will still survive. This tree has been used by Asian cultures not only as part of their daily diet but also as a natural way of treating minor and serious illnesses.

In Europe, in particular, Germany and France the maidenhair tree seed by-products are very popular to relieve maladies. The tree is starting to become popular in America as well and a wide range of products have appeared in the market as a result. Every part of the tree is used to produce amazing natural remedies from the leaves, going through the stem and reaching the seeds, everything is used to get all the beneficial qualities of the ginkgo tree.

One particular thing about this tree is that the seeds are not covered by a fruit as most other seeds are. There are female and male trees and the female is the one in charge of making ovules. Every ovule has an egg cell that is of a very light green color at the beginning and then changes color to a darker green and a brownish color at the end of the development.

One thing to consider about the development of the tree is that it might take thirty years to be fully developed. The ovules are pollinated by the wind and the fertilization stage takes place on the tree. Once the ovules have been fertilized they get a plum aspect but with a yellow tone. Due to the fact that the fertilization takes place on the tree, the maidenhair tree seed is an essential part of the natural environment for plants.

Despite the fact that the seeds have a terrible smell, some people in Japan include the ginkgo seed as part of their diet. However, we need to mention that they do not eat the outside of the seed because it can be dangerous for men. The inside of the seed is what most Asian cultures use as a natural medicine because it has many beneficial effects to treat breathing problems. This is because the seed contains two substances that aid in many different health conditions.

The first substance is Vitamin P, which is used to fight free radicals and prevent cancer. The other substance is lactone, which helps the protoplasm to be energized and to avoid coagulating and circulation problems.

As you can see, the Maidenhair tree seed is very versatile and can be used in various forms for various reasons making this particular herb valuable to the health of people worldwide.
